From the bestselling author of Jurassic Park , Timeline , and Sphere comes a gripping thriller about the shocking demise of eight American geologists in the darkest region of the Congo. Deep in the African rain forest, near the ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, a field expedition is brutally killed. At the Houston-based Earth Resources Technology Services, Inc., a horrified supervisor watches a gruesome video transmission of that ill-fated group and sees a haunting, grainy, man-like blur moving amongst the bodies. In San Francisco, an extraordinary gorilla named Amy, who has a 620-sign vocabulary, may hold the secret to that fierce carnage. Immediately, a new expedition is sent to the Congo with Amy in tow, descending into a secret, forbidden world where the only escape may be through the grisliest death. Amazon.com Review If you saw the 1995 film adaptation of this Crichton thriller, somebody owes you an apology. While you're waiting for that to happen, try reading the vastly more intelligent novel on which the movie was based. The broad lines of the plot remain the same: A research team deep in the jungle disappears after a mysterious and grisly gorilla attack. A subsequent team, including a sign-language-speaking simian named Amy, follows the original team's tracks only to be subjected to more mysterious and grisly gorilla attacks. If you can look past the breathless treatment of '80s technology, like voice-recognition software and 256K RAM modules (the book was written in 1980), you'll find the same smart use of science and edge-of-your-seat suspense shared by Crichton's other work. --Paul Hughes Review A group of scientists visits the Congo jungle in search of a lost city and a domestic apes ancestors, only to find the jungle holds some strange primates who have killer instincts. High drama marks a vivid condensed audio version of a thriller. -- Midwest Book Review From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Jurassic Park and Timeline comes a gripping thriller about the shocking demise of eight American geologists in the darkest region of the Congo. “Thrilling.” — The New York Times Book Review Deep in the African rainforest, near the ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, a field expedition is brutally killed. Congo is a 1980 science fiction novel by Michael Crichton, the fifth under his own name and the fifteenth overall. The novel centers on an expedition searching for diamonds and investigating the mysterious deaths of a previous expedition in the dense tropical rainforest of the Congo. Crichton calls Congo a lost world novel in the tradition founded by Henry Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines, featuring the mines of that work's title. ---------- Also contained in: - [Congo/Jurassic Park](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL8475707W) - [Congo / Sphere / Eaters of the Dead][2] [1]: http://www.michaelcrichton.com/congo/ [2]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL14950504W/Congo_Sphere_Eaters_of_the_Dead Cover Title Page Copyright Epigraph Introduction Prologue: The Place of Bones DAY 1: HOUSTON DAY 2: SAN FRANCISCO DAY 3: TANGIER DAY 4: NAIROBI DAY 5: MORUTI DAY 6: LIKO DAY 7: MUKENKO DAY 8: KANYAMAGUFA DAY 9: ZINJ DAY 10: ZINJ DAY 11: ZINJ DAY 12: ZINJ DAY 13: MUKENKO Epilogue: The Place of Fire References Dedication About the Author Books by Michael Crichton Armed with the latest gifts of advanced technology, a California scientist (male), a ruthless corporation agent (female), and a mercenary hunter (male) face the dangers of the Congo jungle in search of the diamonds of the lost city of Zinj On an expedition to return Amy, his talking gorilla, to her home in the Congo, Professor Peter Elliot is joined by others who hope to find a legendary diamond mine guarded by mutant gorillas
