Computational Approaches to the Study of Movement in Archaeology : Theory, Practice and Interpretation of Factors and Effects of Long Term Landscape Formation and Transformation

Die Reihe Topoi. Berlin Studies of the Ancient World versammelt Beitr�ge aus allen altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, von der Ur- und Fr�hgeschichte �ber die Klassische Arch�ologie bis zur antiken Philosophie, Wissenschaftstheorie und Theologie. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden Monographien und Sammelb�nde, in denen die Forschungsergebnisse des Exzellenzclusters Topoi vorgestellt werden. Weitere Schwerpunkte sind in Planung. Das Exzellenzcluster Topoi untersucht die Formation und Transformation von Raum und Wissen in den antiken Zivilisationen. Topoi wird von der Freien Universit�t Berlin und der Humboldt-Universit�t zu Berlin gemeinsam getragen. Partner sind die Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, das Deutsche Arch�ologische Institut, das Max-Planck-Institut f�r Wissenschaftsgeschichte und die Stiftung Preu�ischer Kulturbesitz. This book contains a collection of papers discussing questions related to space and movement in the framework of computational archaeology, landscape archaeology, historical geography and archaeological theory. The contributions, written by recognized experts in the field, show how the study of settlements pattern and movement has been dramatically transformed by the use of technology like Geographic Information System (GIS). The papers focus on the ways to approach past movement using GIS in archaeological landscape studies: theoretical, technical and interpretative issues are addressed and explored.
