Coming of Age in Byzantium : Adolescence and Society

Open Access The various phases of life and their manifestations in theory and social reality constitute a well-established area of research in the fields of western medieval studies and ancient history. In this respect the Byzantine East has been widely neglected. This volume will focus on the Byzantine experience of adolescence, which may be defined as the biological transition from childhood to adulthood as well as the social and psychological experience of leaving the care of parents, guardians and family groups and the gradual integration into adult society. The contributions gathered therein treat seven subtopics that correspond to crucial questions in the current research on adolescence: the legal status of adolescents; the mechanisms of transition from childhood to adolescence; the socialisation and gradual integration into adult society; adolescents in Byzantine art; psychological aspects of adolescence from medieval to modern times; illnesses of adolescents; adolescents in the western medieval world.The focus is on the Middle and Late Byzantine Period, where historical, hagiographical,legal and medical sources offer rich material for an investigation of these aspects. The book contributes to a better understanding of all these questions and to show future trajectories for research.

Das Jahrbuch und die Begleitreihe Millennium-Studien wollen Grenzen überschreiten, Grenzen zwischen den Epochen und regionalen Räumen wie auch Grenzen zwischen den Disziplinen. Millennium ist international, transdisziplinär und epochenübergreifend ausgerichtet. Das Herausgebergremium und der Beirat repräsentieren ein breites Spektrum von Fächern: Kunst- und literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge kommen ebenso zu ihrem Rechtwie historische, theologische und philosophische, Beiträge zu den lateinischen und griechischen Kulturen ebenso wie zu den orientalischen.

In den Studien werden einschlägige Monographien oder Sammelwerke aus dem gesamten Themenspektrum vorgelegt.

Alle an den Verlag angebotenen Manuskripte werden einem Begutachtungsprozess unterzogen, bevor sie offiziell zur Veröffentlichung angenommen werden können.
Für die Reihe Millennium Studien / Millennium Studies gilt ein "double blind peer review" Verfahren. Alle Manuskripte werden von einem der Reihenherausgeber und von einem externen Gutachter begutachtet. Die Gutachten werden auf der Basis eines Fragebogens ausgestellt und anonymisiert, bevor sie an den Autor/die Autorin zurückgeschickt werden.

Im Jahrbuch soll durch die Vielfalt der Artikel, deren Verbindungslinien untereinander jeweils ein ausführliches Editorial skizziert, das Gespräch zwischen den Fächern und den nationalen Forschungskulturen belebt werden. Einzelrezensionen werden nicht veröffentlicht, bisweilen aber Literaturberichte. Publikationssprachen sind vornehmlich Englisch und Deutsch; die Aufnahme französischer, italienischer und spanischer Artikel ist möglich.

In dieser Hinsicht wurde der byzantinische Osten weitgehend vernachlässigt. Millennium is international, transdisciplinary and epoch-wide. The editorial board and the advisory board represent a broad spectrum of subjects: articles in art and literary criticism are just as right as historical, theological and philosophical contributions to the Latin and Greek cultures as well as to the oriental ones.
