We would like to thank the Exchange Programme of the British Council, as well as the Joint Exchange Programme of the British Academy, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), to whom we are deeply grateful for their past and present funding arrangements, and the many universities and research institutes in the People's Republic of China (PRC) which provided helpful assistance. We should also like to thank the innumerable Chinese academics, civil servants, managers, trade unions' officials and many others who gave generously of their time in order to help us. Special note should be made of the unreserved collaboration of Tsinghua University and the CASS Institute of Industrial Economics in Beijing, as well as, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, the Ministry of Labour the Shenzen Labour Bureau and the Shenzen Municipal Trade Unions Council. We would also like to acknowledge appreciation of the support of the University of Hong Kong School of Business and the Judge Institute of Management Studies at the University of Cambridge: all our colleagues at both academic institutions (and especially Jo Grantham for secretarial and administrative back-up) as well as the Presidents, Vice-Presidents and Fellows of Wolfson College, past and present. Next, we must mention the important role of the editorial staff at Macmillan, namely Tim Farmiloe and colleagues, as well as Professor Peter Nolan (the series editor) without whom this book would not have appeared. Last, but not least, we must thank our family members of their forbearance and patience during our absences on field trips in China: their unstinting support has proved invaluable. The author and publisher would like to thank the editors and publishers of the following for giving permission to quote from earlier versions of our own work: particularly the International Journal of Human Resource Management and the Journal of General Management, as well as the Macmillan Press Ltd. xiv ## Parti Evolving 'A greater movement naturally requires a greater union, and the greatest movement requires the greatest union.
