This series aims to analyze issues in China's current economic development, and to shed light upon that process by examining China' s economic history . It contains a wide range of books on the Chinese economy past and present. The series includes not only studies written by leading Western authorities, but publishes translations of the most important works on the Chinese economy produced within China. It intends to make a major contribution towards understanding this immensely important part of the world economy. This book examines China's export policies and performance in the post-1978 reform period. In the light of China's experience, it is deeply critical of the Stalinist model, which opposes developing countries' extensive involvement in the world economy. However, it also demonstrates the limitations of the 'export-led' development strategy. This book argues that a high degree of participation in international trade is essential, even for a country of China's huge size, to achieve economic growth of the desired pace and type. The book first surveys the evolution of China's exports in the pre-reform period, especially under Mao. Then it explores the post-1978 changes in the Chinese view of trade theory and policies for export promotion. In assessing these theoretical changes and policies, the book provides a detailed account of China's export development, highlighting one of the important components of China's post-Mao reforms.
