Qaqet is a non-Austronesian language, spoken by about 15,000people in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. In the remote inland, children acquire Qaqet as their first language. Much of what weknow about child‐directed speech (CDS) stems from children livingin middle‐class, urban, industrialised contexts. This book combinesevidence from different methods, showing that the features typicalfor speech to children in such contexts are also found in QaqetCDS.
Preliminary insights from naturalistic audio recordings suggestthat Qaqet children are infrequently addressed directly. Ininterviews, Qaqet caregivers express the view that children 'pickup' the language on their own. Still, they have clear ideas abouthow to talk to children in a way that makes it easier for them tounderstand what is said.
In order to compare adult- and child-directed speech in Qaqet,20 retellings of a film have been analysed, half of them told toadults and half to children. The data show that talk directed tochildren differs from talk directed to adults for several features, among them utterance type, mean length of utterance, amount ofhesitations and intonation. Despite this clear tendency, thereseems to be a cut-off point of around 40 months of age for severalof those features from which the talk directed to children becomesmore like the talk directed to adults.
1. 1 Welcome to ggplot2 ggplot2 is an R package for producing statistical, or data, graphics, but it is unlike most other graphics packages because it has a deep underlying grammar. This grammar, based on the Grammar of Graphics (Wilkinson, 2005), is composed of a set of independent components that can be composed in many di?erent ways. This makesggplot2 very powerful, because you are not limited to a set of pre-speci?ed graphics, but you can create new graphics that are precisely tailored for your problem. This may sound overwhelming, but because there is a simple set of core principles and very few special cases, ggplot2 is also easy to learn (although it may take a little time to forget your preconceptions from other graphics tools). Practically,ggplot2 provides beautiful, hassle-free plots, that take care of ?ddly details like drawing legends. The plots can be built up iteratively and edited later. A carefully chosen set of defaults means that most of the time you can produce a publication-quality graphic in seconds, but if you do have special formatting requirements, a comprehensive theming system makes it easy to do what you want. Instead of spending time making your graph look pretty, you can focus on creating a graph that best reveals the messages in your data. The role of play in child development is a source of ongoing interest and debate. In this book, renowned expert Peter Smith offers an expansive definition of the term “play”, taking an in-depth look at its impact on children, as well as its adaptive value for birds and mammals, including primates. Using both contemporary and classic research, Smith examines how different age groups and sexes participate in a wide variety of play, including exercise and rough-and- tumble play, fantasy play and imaginary friends, and play with objects. The book gauges the function of play in early childhood education and makes the case for and against recess breaks in school. How play occurs in different societies and among various populations – including children with special needs – is also explored. With its comprehensive coverage of theoretical, historical, cross-cultural, and evolutionary perspectives, Children and Play holds significant insights for parents, educators, and clinicians. Explores how early endeavours in linguistics were used to aid in overcoming practical and ideological difficulties of colonial rule Traces the uses and effects of colonial linguistic projects in the shaping of identities and communities that were under, or in opposition to, imperial regimes Examines enduring influences of colonial linguistics in contemporary thinking about language and cultural difference Brings new insight into post-colonial controversies including endangered languages and language rights in the globalized twenty-first century Relating Events in Narrative, Volume 2: Typological and Contextual Perspectives edited by Sven Strömqvist and Ludo Verhoeven, is the much anticipated follow-up volume to Ruth Berman and Dan Slobin's successful ""frog-story studies"" book, Relating Events in Narrative: A Crosslinguistic Developmental Study (1994). Working closely with Ruth Berman and Dan Slobin, the new editors have brought together a wide range of scholars who, inspired by the 1994 book, have all used Mercer Mayer's Frog, Where Are You? as a basis for their research. The new book, which is divided into two parts, features a Describes ggplot2, a data visualization package for R that uses the insights from Leland Wilkison's "Grammar of Graphics" to create a powerful and flexible system for creating data graphics. This book is suitable for those who have struggled with displaying their data in an informative and attractive way This follow-up volume to the "frog-story studies" book, "Relating Events in Narrative: A Cross-Linguistic Developmental Study" (1994) is dividied into two main parts. Part one focuses on crosslinguistic perspectives whilst part two offers a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives
