colleagues who have supported me through this project, especially Simon Winlow, Nick Gane and Dave Beer for their comments on various draft chapters of this book. However, particular recognition should go to Emma Uprichard for not only her support and enthusiasm but the useful comments on the entire manuscript. I must also acknowledge my debt to Mike Presdee, whose feedback on the final manuscript was invaluable. Thanks also to the editorial team at Palgrave who have patiently answered all of my numerous questions: Philippa Grand, Hazel Woodbridge and Olivia Middleton. viii In the 21st century celebrities and celebrity culture thrives. This book explores the much noted but little analyzed relationship between celebrity and crime. Criminals who become celebrities and celebrities who become criminals are examined, drawing on Foucault's theory of governance. We live in a celebrity culture where even criminals can become 'well-known' and celebrated on a mass scale. This book engages with the concept of celebrity and its relationship with crime through criminals who become celebrities (criminal celebrities) and celebrities who become criminals (rogue celebrities). Drawing on a range of case studies, Foucault's theory of governmentality is used to examine the influence of celebrated criminals as a controlling force in contemporary society, examining high profile criminals such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Krays, Al Capone, Myra Hindley and Ian Brady; and celebrities such as OJ Simpson, Winona Ryder, Martha Stewart, Michael Jackson and Mike Tyson Machine generated contents note: Introduction: Cultural Criminology and the Joy of Transgression * Celebrating Criminality and Cultural Criminology * Culture Industry and Foucauldian Governmentality * Resonance and Celebrated Criminality * Celebrated Criminality and Governance * The Undermining of Celebrated Criminality * The Evolution of Celebrated Criminality * Bibliography Introduction: Cultural Criminology and the Joy of Transgression * Celebrating Criminality and Cultural Criminology * Culture Industry and Foucauldian Governmentality * Resonance and Celebrated Criminality * Celebrated Criminality and Governance * The Undermining of Celebrated Criminality * The Evolution of Celebrated Criminality * Bibliography.
