Based on the concept of corporate social responsibility, this book analyses modern approaches adopted by mining companies that could minimise negative impacts of mining and enhance positive benefits to corporate stakeholders. Using a case study of two mining sectors (gold and diamond mining) the book evaluates policies and practices of mining companies within four key areas of corporate social responsibility: environmental protection, health and safety, employee relations and community development. Also included is an assessment of three models for community development that are developed within the mining industries: company-led approach, establishment of corporate foundation and tri-sector partnership. The study analyses management of corporate social responsibility issues with specific reference to mining in the Russian Federation and provides a comparison with global mining companies. As ethical issues continue to rise to the top of political, social and business agendas, the competitive market-economy model comes under renewed scrutiny for its potential to violate the fundamental values and integrity required to maintain and enrich a civil society. Bringing together cutting-edge research from leading academics in the US, Europe, Australia, UK and India, this book explores the challenge business ethics poses for individuals, organizations, public administration and society at large. With potential violations which stretch from personal lapses of bribery and corruption to the more fundamental questions prompted by those who push beyond the limits of an ethically grounded competitive business system, this book provides a stimulating attempt to broaden ethical awareness and define the framework of actions within today's increasingly complex business environment. The book is aimed primarily at researchers and post-graduate students of management. Practicing managers will also benefit from the multiple perspectives of ethics in theory and application. The book will provide insights for government policy-makers, regulatory bodies and general readers "This book investigates the role of mining industries in sustainable development, exploring its economic, social and environmental dimensions. Based on the concept of corporate social responsibility the book analyses modern approaches adopted by mining companies that could minimise negative impacts of mining and enhance positive benefits to corporate stakeholders. Using the study of two mining sectors (gold and diamond mining) the book evaluates policies and practices of mining companies within four key areas of corporate social responsibility: environmental protection, health and safety, employee relations and community development "It is often asserted that the ruling elite in Western capitalist economies now consists of liberal intellectuals and their media sympathisers. By contrast this book looks at the real elite in Australian and New Zealand society and shows that there is still a ruling class based upon economic dominance. From an analysis of corporate and public records, interviews, and other primary and secondary data, it develops a picture of networks of power that are changing but are as real as any network in the past."--Provided by publisher Boards Of Trustees And Their Intellectual Environment -- Boards And Their Varying Nature -- From Whence Structure -- Regional Cultures Of Trusteeship -- Industry Cultures Of Trusteeship -- What Difference Does Faith Make? -- The Six Cities Trusteeship Project Dataset -- Statistical Models And Model Selection -- Analyses Of Trusteeship In Different Contexts. This paper is based on my personal experiences as a professor in Denmark who was born and educated in the United States, who has worked with the theory and practice of management in Europe for almost 40 years, and who has visited India 18 times and established a teamwork between the Copenhagen Business School and some of India's best reputed schools of management. It is often asserted that the ruling elite in Western capitalist economies now consists of liberal intellectuals and their media sympathisers. By contrast, this book looks at the real elite in Australian and New Zealand society and shows that there is still a ruling class based upon economic dominance. G Murray, Australia "The book is aimed primarily at researchers and post-graduate students of management. Practicing managers will also benefit from the multiple perspectives of ethics in theory and application. The book will provide insights for government policy-makers, regulatory bodies and general readers."--Jacket To present a sufficiently thorough, evocative picture of the ethics of capitalism as the first chapter of a book discussing those ethics, an overview of the history of the concepts involved is required. What role do entrepreneurial individuals and firms have to play in the adoption of more sustainable business practices?
