Description:This unique offering is beyond a classic guide to the techniques of advanced shoulder arthroscopy -- it is a compendium of pearls provided by one of the greatest thinkers and innovators in the field. The format is unique and entertaining, each pearl beginning with a "cowboy principle" followed by fundamental concepts and innovative ideas from Dr. Burkhart and then offering numerous clinically applicable tricks and tips.
Purpose:The mission of this book is to facilitate the development of arthroscopic shoulder skills founded on principles that underlie a successful operative shoulder arthroscopy followed by an extensive number of details, tricks, technical tips, and pearls that will allow readers to improve their skills and outcomes when performing interventional shoulder arthroscopy. Indeed, Dr. Burkhart and his two colleagues (Steve Snyder and James Esch) for the past decade have been on a mission to advance shoulder arthroscopy as the new gold standard of shoulder surgery. These are lofty goals and Dr. Burkhart has been central in getting us there.
Audience:The target audience is clearly the orthopedic surgeon who performs shoulder arthroscopy. Indeed, as interventional shoulder arthroscopy becomes the gold standard or equivalent to the gold standard for many procedures, the target audience includes residents in training who will most certainly be using these pearls and techniques in their future practices. Dr. Burkhart is an international authority and innovative thinker and is perhaps one of the most credible authorities on the topic. His open-minded attitude and approach might also make him the only author who could come up with such an innovative and entertaining concept as a Cowboy's Guide.
Features:The book begins with fundamentals of shoulder arthroscopy including many of Dr. Burkhart's common sense ways of understanding concepts of flow mechanics and visualization. Subsequent chapters and sections step through a myriad of pathologies and offer pearls in how to address them. The book is a complete and enjoyable read. Nonetheless, there is a bonus of a DVD that allows us to visualize the techniques in action. The publication clearly focuses on Dr. Burkhart's approach to these problems, but the absence of conflicting ideas is a bonus rather than a shortcoming.
Assessment:This is an absolute "must-have" book for orthopedic surgeons who perform shoulder arthroscopy. The innovative format is refreshing and makes it easy to read. It also gives us the opportunity to review the myriad thoughts and innovations of one of the greatest thinkers in the field of arthroscopy. I am convinced that this book will be rarely on the shelves of our orthopedic residents' library as they take it down and continuously leaf through it for another clinical pearl or cowboy principle. I tip my Stetson to Dr. Burkhart for a job well done.
