The cloistered walls of Shrewsbury Abbey have always protected Brother Cadfael from the raging Civil War. But when fighting escalates between Empress Maud and King Stephen, the war takes a deadly step closer to him. Taken prisoner in the battle for Maud's land is Olivier de Bretagne, Brother Cadfael's own son- born as a result of a brief encouter thirty years earlier. Now Brother Cadfael resolves to plead for his son's release at a peace conference scheduled to take place in Coventry; but there is no sign of Olivier there. After much soul searching, Cadfael makes the difficult decision to break his monastic vows, leaving Coventry without permission- because he knows he must do everything in his power to find his son. In the fall of 1145, the younger son of Robert of Gloucester switches sides, abandoning his father and the cause of his aunt, the Empress Maud. Philip FitzRobert will not only fight on King Stephen's side, but he has turned over a chain of key garrisons, including the newly built castle at Faringdon, and its clever and unscrupulous castellan Brian de Soulis. Not all the men in that castle agree to changing sides in the eight-year fight for the crown of England between the King and his cousin the Empress. Thirty knights, unwilling to take part in what they see as treason, are taken as hostages by the King. One of their number, however, has disappeared, swallowed up without a trace. He is Olivier de Bretagne; and Brother Cadfae is prepared to sacrifice everything to find and free him. But Cadfael has few leads and the best one - de Soulis - has been stabbed to death by an unknown hand. November 1145, and the bitter rift between King Stephen and Empress Maud at last has a chance for reconciliation. It is hoped that a council will resolve the question of prisoners of war. Cadfael has a special interest in attending, for he is seeking his lost son This is another title in the Brother Cadfael series featuring the medieval monk. Brother Cadfael leaves his Abbey to go in search of his son, Olivier de Bretagne, but finds that passions can all too easily spill over into violence and murder
