While in recent years there has been considerable progress in treating adult pain, children's pain has often been inadequately treated and the importance of place of treatment has been neglected. In Bringing Pain Relief to Children: Treatment Approaches, a panel of prominent clinician-scientists comprehensively reviews the latest developments in pediatric pain management, with special emphasis on the setting in which pain is detected and managed. The authors explore the cutting-edge of children's pain care in inpatient, outpatient, palliative care, school, and residential settings, and describe alternate approaches, including complementary and alternative medicine, pain management via the internet and information technology, and pain care in developing countries. They also consider the theory and explicit practice of knowledge dissemination, a critical issue regardless of the setting in which treatment is being delivered. The book is derived from the keynote talks given at the International Forum on Pediatric Pain, held at White Point Beach in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the fall of 2004. Innovative and state-of-the-art, Bringing Pain Relief to Children: Treatment Approaches offers pain specialists, pediatricians, nurses, psychologists, and other health professionals the latest research on the contexts in which children's pain can be treated and novel approaches to the management of their pain in different settings.

Reviewer:Michael White, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This book reviews the approach to pain management in children in several clinical settings. Specific drugs and their unique attributes for application to children are included in this review with one chapter devoted to complementary and alternative approaches.
Purpose:The authors acknowledges data suggesting that pain relief in children is poorly served and attempts to provide a framework for providing appropriate means of pain control in children addressing their needs as unique from adults. This is clearly an area of need in pediatric practice and the book distills a tremendous body of literature into a practical approach.
Audience:This is a good source for physicians as well as other healthcare providers who may participate in the care of children in environments likely to cause discomfort.
Features:The book addresses the management of pain and the associated distress for children in many different settings, ranging from general clinic visits to hospice care. Current theoretical concerns and practical applications are reviewed for these settings, possibly a useful framework to minimize distress for the child at risk for inadequate pain management.
Assessment:This is a summary of presentations from the 5th International Forum on Pediatric Pain held in 2004 and serves as an up-to-date review of contemporary approaches to the unique needs of pediatric patients.
