Open Access Of the 218 letters, 126 belong to correspondence with the Imperial Count Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel, a dedicated patron of the supporters of Christian Wolff and the head of the Berlin chapter of the Society of Alethophiles. In Berlin and Leipzig great hopes were placed in the Prussian heir apparent Friedrich II, whom many saw a kind of Platonian “philosopher king” who would help elevate reason and Wolffian philosophy to new heights. The letters document the development of a rationalistic strain in Gottsched's sermons. They also provide insight into the satires of Wolff's opponents written by L.A.V. Gottsched. Gottsched's speeches concerning Martin Opitz and the “book printing anniversary” (__Buchdruckjubiläum__) found strong resonance in the correspondence and inspired letters concerning similar undertakings. Jakob Brucker's letters illuminate the planning and creation of the “__Bilder-sal__”, a contemporary history of notable scholars that featured biographies and portraits, and which came to include Gottsched and his wife. * First critical edition of approx. 6,000 letters to and from Gottsched * Edited by the Saxonian Academy of Sciences, Leipzig * A first-rate edition in regards to cultural history and the history of ideas * A standard work for historians in the fields of literature and philosophy

Von den 218 Briefen gehören 126 zur Korrespondenz mit dem Reichsgrafen Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel, dem engagierten Mäzen der Wolffianer und Haupt der Berliner Alethophilengesellschaft. In Berlin wie in Leipzig setzte man die größten Erwartungen in den preußischen Thronfolger Friedrich II. Man sah in ihm den Roi-philosophe, der der Vernunft in Gestalt der Wolffschen Philosophie zum Sieg verhelfen wird. Die Briefe dokumentieren die Entstehung von Gottscheds vernunftgemäßer Predigtlehre und den Umgang mit den Satiren auf die Wolffgegner, die L. A. V. Gottsched verfaßt hatte. Gottscheds Reden auf Martin Opitz und auf das Buchdruckjubiläum fanden im Briefwechsel eine starke Resonanz und inspirierten Korrespondenten zu ähnlichen Unternehmungen. Die Briefe Jakob Bruckers gewähren Einblick in Planung und Entstehung des Bilder=sals, des großen Porträt-Biographiewerkes zur zeitgenössischen Gelehrtengeschichte, in das bald auch das Ehepaar Gottsched Eingang fand.

Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700–1766) is considered to be one of the greatest scholars of the Early German Enlightenment. As a professor for poetics in Leipzig, he worked towards a reformation of the German language and a renaissance in German drama. His extensive correspondence and social contacts made him a ‚European event‘ and his papers are being presented here in a standard edition: 25 volumes, approx. 6,000 letters to and from Gottsched, predominantly in German, are being published with a critical apparatus and an academic commentary. This edition is being published in co-operation with the Saxonian Academy of Sciences and edited by members of the academy. The edition is scheduled to be published over 25 years and offers an ideal addition to the multi-volume edition of Gottsched's works, already published by de Gruyter.
