In The Late 1990s Nato Dropped Bombs And Supported Armed Insurgencies In Yugoslavia While Insisting That Its Motives Were Purely Humanitarian And That Its Only Goal Was Peace. However, George Szamuely Argues That Nato Interventions Actually Prolonged Conflicts, Heightened Enmity, Increased Casualties, And Fueled Demands For More Interventions. Eschewing The One-sided Approach Adopted By Previous Works On The Yugoslavian Crisis, Szamuely Offers A Broad Overview Of The Conflict, Its Role In The Rise Of Nato's Authority, And Its Influence On Western Policy On The Balkans. His Timely, Judicious, And Accessible Study Sheds New Light On The Roots Of The Contemporary Doctrine Of Humanitarian Intervention. This book offers a groundbreaking perspective on Judeo-Christian coexistence in medieval Spain, in particular on the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), one of the most important pilgrimage routes in Europe. The author uncovers new evidence of Judeo-Christian cooperation in Castilian monasteries on the Camino. It reveals that a collaborative climate endured in these monasteries as demonstrated by the transmission of cuaderna vía poetry from Christians to Jews. The research focuses on poems written by Jews in Castilian (Spanish) during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries that illustrate a progressive mastery of cuaderna vía poetry, which is the product of interaction in monastic schools between Jews and Christian clerics who created and cultivated this Castilian poetic form.
Bombs for Peace: NATO's Humanitarian War on Yugoslavia describes the genesis of the contemporary doctrine of humanitarian intervention. It details how NATO seized on the crisis in Yugoslavia to transform itself from a defensive alliance into a global superpower, NATO bombed, supported armed insurgencies and airlifted arms, all while insisting that its motives were humanitarian and that its only goal was peace. Though scholarly - Bombs for Peace makes use of material that has been ignored by previous studies - it will also appeal to a wider audience. Book jacket This illuminating study describes the genesis of the contemporary doctrine of humanitarian intervention. It is the first comprehensive analysis of Western policy towards the Balkans from the late 1980s on. Previous works have often taken partisan approaches focusing on isolated events rather than the multifaceted conflict of which such events were a part. Though scholarly, the book will also appeal to a wider audience interested in world affairs. A ciritical overview of the policies of NATO governments and major human rights organizations during the Yugoslav conflict.
