Black Ball 9 : New Research in African American Baseball History

Under the guidance of Leslie Heaphy and an editorial board of leading historians, this peer-reviewed, annual book series offers new, authoritative research on all subjects related to black baseball, including the Negro major and minor leagues, teams, and players; pre-Negro League organization and play; barnstorming; segregation and integration; class, gender, and ethnicity; the business of black baseball; and the arts.  Black Ball is an annual publication for new and authoritative research on all subjects related to black baseball, including the Negro major and minor leagues, pre-Negro League organization and play, and the integration of major league baseball. With articles from across the disciplines, employing a wide range of scholarly approaches, Black Ball promotes the serious study of African American sporting history and culture. The current work, number 9, includes articles on the mythic structure of Satchel Paige's career, the evolution of integration narratives, Monte Irvin's career outside of the majors, J.B. Martin and 1940 Memphis politics, the achievements of Larry Doby and Jackie Robinson, and Buck O'Neil's contributions to Kansas City and black baseball.
