A generation ago, they wrote __Beyond the Fragments__. Inspired by the activism of the 1970s and facing the imminent triumph of the Right under Margaret Thatcher, they sought to apply our experiences as feminists to creating stronger bonds of solidarity in a new kind of Left movement. Since then the obstacles facing them have grown formidably—deepening recession, environmental pollution, falling real wages, and savage welfare cuts. New forms of resistance have appeared, but how are they to coalesce? In three new essays to this third edition of __Beyond the Fragments__ , Shelia Rowbotham, Lynne Segal, and Hilary Wainwright return to the fraught question of how to consolidate diverse upsurges of rebellion into effective, open, democratic Left coalitions. **Sheila Rowbotham** is Honorary Research Fellow in Sociology in the School of Social Sciences within the Faculty of Humanities at Manchester University and Visiting Fellow in the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies at the University of Bristol. "The last decade has seen the women's movement gain strength among all classes of society. At the same time, the left has too often floundered, as fragmented groups of party liberals and leftists struggle against a growing right-wing trend. There's an important reason for all of this, say the authors. It lies in the very different structure of the women's movement as compared to that of most socialist organizations. This book shows what the left must learn if it is to become an effective force for grassroots change."-- From publisher's description Cover About the cover Title Page Copyright Foreword Contents Acknowledgements Introduction to the U.S. Edition—Rosalyn Baxandall Introduction—Hilary Wainwright The Women's Movement and Organizing for Socialism—Sheila Rowbotham A Local Experience—Lynne Segal Moving Beyond the Fragments—Hilary Wainwright Back Cover
