Was the Enlightenment project successful? Is the ideal of the mature citizen realized? Or has Western philosophy, in the face of the disasters of the 20th century and the worldview perplexity today, ultimately worked 'knowledge-prevention'? On the other hand, what would be the (anthropological, educational, cultural, etc.) prerequisites of a truly self-determined life? These "deepest, most fundamental and yet barely touched problems of ›philosophy‹" (Laska on April 6, 2001) are discussed in the exchange of letters between the Nuremberg private scholar Bernd A. Laska (*1943) and the Kiel philosophy professor Hermann Schmitz (1928-2021).
