Beginning Chinese

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1946. — 202 p. This book is based on the method of teaching developed at Yale University and applied to Chinese by Professor George A. Kennedy. The only sound way to study a modern language is to begin by speaking. The traditional system of writing Chinese is extremely difficult for it uses a separate character for each syllable. Our lessons are based on the actual everyday language. The forms are presented in a transcription developed at Yale University. No characters are used. Our method of instruction can be summarized by the words 'analysis' and 'repetition'. To this end the present work has limited the vocabulary to some 400 words; yet it provides more than 4000 sentences and phrases illustrating the use of this vocabulary.
