"Attribute grammars have shown themselves to be a useful formalism for specifying the syntax and the static semantics of programming languages. They are also useful for implementing syntax-directed editors, compilers, translator writing systems and compiler generators, and any application that has a strong syntactic base. However, no textbooks are available that cover the entire field. To redress this imbalance, anInternational Summer School on Attribute Grammars, Applications and Systems was held in Prague, Czechoslovakia in June 1991. The course aimed at teaching the state of the art in attribute grammars, and their relation to other language specification methods. This volume presents the proceedings of the school. The papers are well suited for self-study, and a selection of them can be used for introductory courses in attribute grammars."--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE Introduction to attribute grammars....Pages 1-15 Attribute Grammars as a specification method....Pages 16-47 Attribute evaluation methods....Pages 48-113 Implementation of visit-oriented attribute evaluators....Pages 114-139 Storage allocation for attribute evaluators using stacks and queues....Pages 140-150 Grammar flow analysis....Pages 151-186 Attribute evaluation and parsing....Pages 187-214 Incremental attribute evaluation....Pages 215-233 A survey of parallel attribute evaluation methods....Pages 234-255 Higher Order Attribute Grammars....Pages 256-296 Object-orientation in attribute grammars....Pages 297-329 Attribute grammars and logic programs: A comparison of concepts....Pages 330-357 Affix grammars for programming languages....Pages 358-373 Incremental static semantic analysis for object-oriented languages using Door Attribute Grammars....Pages 374-379 Attribute grammars in a compiler construction environment....Pages 380-400 Prototyping by using an attribute grammar as a logic program....Pages 401-437 Using the generative aspect of attribute grammars in a knowledge based way....Pages 438-459 Natural language interface construction using attribute grammars....Pages 460-468 Affix grammars for natural languages....Pages 469-484 Internals and externals of the FNC-2 attribute grammar system....Pages 485-504 An overview of the OPTRAN system....Pages 505-506 Attribute reevaluation in OPTRAN....Pages 507-507 The translator writing system RUEGEN-KS....Pages 508-513 Attribute grammars have proved to be a useful formalism for specifying the context-sensitive syntax and the semantics of programming languages, as well as for implementing editors, compilers and compiler-writing systems.
