An Atlas of the Clinical Microbiology of Infectious Diseases, Volume Two: Viral, Fungal, and Parasitic Agents is the second of a series and partner to Volume One, which deals with Microbiological and Clinical Attributes. Filled with highly instructional visual images, this atlas covers typical and atypical presentations of viral, fungal and parasitic agents and offers insightful comments aiding their identification and clinical significance. Drawing on the expertise of a distinguished clinical microbiologist, it presents more than 240 colored photomicrographs derived from an extensive personal collection of slides depicting the salient and unusual presentations of microorganisms. Doody Review Services Reviewer: Rebecca T. Horvat, PhD, D(ABMM)(University of Kansas Medical Center) Description: This book is a treasure of visual descriptions of viruses, fungi, and parasites. It is divided into these major sections with chapters that cover specific topics. Purpose: The purpose is to provide a library of photographs to be used by clinical laboratories to assist in the identification of unknown fungi and parasites. The visual nature of the book provides an important resource to laboratorians who do not often see these diseases. Audience: I would highly recommend this as a valuable reference for all clinical microbiologists and pathologists. I found myself absorbed in reading the description and comparing these to my own experience of viewing stained material or culture growth. I am very appreciative of this reference and have placed it close to my microscope. Features: The majority of the pages contain pictures of viruses, fungi, and parasites found in infectious processes in humans. There is some text to orient the reader to the subject. This book has accomplished what it set out to do, which was to provide a comprehensive picture book on human fungal and parasitic pathogens. The color pictures are fantastic! I only wish I had the ability to use them for teaching by importing them into an electronic presentation. The only disappointment is the small number of pictures on viral disease. Maybe a new version can incorporate more virology. Assessment: I love this reference book and will be using it for years. There are very few books like it, specifically designed for clinical microbiologists. It is hoped that new versions will be produced in the future as new agents are identified as human pathogens. This second volume of An Atlas of the Clinical Microbiology of Infectious Diseases focuses on virology, mycology and parasitology. Drawing on more than 40 years of clinical experience, Dr Bottone has compiled an extraordinary collection of photographs and photomicrographs pertaining to the laboratory diagnosis of viral, fungal and parasitic infectious disease agents. To complement the figures, the text clearly and concisely delineates important features related to the etiology, morphology, pathogenesis and disease manifestations of each pathogen. This volume is destined to become an invaluable and practical resource for all clinical microbiologists, technicians, medical students, pathology residents and infectious disease fellows. Covers the gamut of infectious disease agents such as bacteria, parasites, viruses, myocologic agents, and more. The book presents smears from one of the most significant collections in the US and includes coverage of diagnostic features, management issues, therapeutics, and more. Written by one of the legendary figures in infectious medicine, the atlas provides clinical correlations in the text, making the book even more practical for the specialists and clinicians who will use it. Drawing on his forty years of experience, the author develops an organized approach to identifying the salient characteristics of microorganisms v. 1. Bacterial agents v. 2. Viral, fungal, and parasitic agents.
