Reviewer:Valeria A. Forlizzi, (Facultad de Medicina - UBA)
Description:This atlas is a brilliant masterpiece, filled with anatomical illustrations of great accuracy, appropriately labeled and aesthetically appealing. It flows logically and systematically through the regions of the body: back, thorax, abdomen and pelvis, upper and lower extremities, head and neck, and neuroanatomy.
Purpose:This is intended to provide a foundation for the study of anatomy for medical and other health professions students completing a human anatomy course with dissection. It also is valuable for established health professionals who wish to review the relationship of anatomical structures or need to show a student or a patient a key anatomical relationship.
Audience:This atlas is indispensable not only for medical students enrolled in a beginning course in anatomy and medical residents in surgical specialties, but also for health professions practitioners, when in need of reviewing forgotten anatomical concepts.
Features:Regional anatomy and dissection approaches are discussed throughout the book, in different chapters. Limits and contents of the respective regions are described in summary form in detailed tables and very clear schematic diagrams. However, landmarks could be added and marked, to help students learn important surface anatomical relationships that are crucial for developing appropriate physical exam skills.
Assessment:This is a very useful atlas, especially considering it is a single comprehensive volume and not very expensive, when compared with other atlases such as the multivolume Thieme Atlas of Anatomy, Schuenke et al. (Thieme International, 2007) and the more expensive Atlas of Human Anatomy, 4th edition, Netter (Elsevier, 2006).
