The CiP and the title page both identify Etala as editor, but he is in fact the single author of this impressive reference, intended for both general surgeons and gastrointestinal surgeons, and useful as well for colonic and anorectal surgeons. Though not an encyclopedic reference, the volumes include discussion of the clinical picture, the preoperative and intraoperative diagnosis, and the surgical indications in addition to description of surgical anatomy and techniques. The procedures described are those most frequently practiced by the author (alternative techniques are also described in separate chapters); descriptions include both manual suturing and staplers, as well as the most accepted laparoscopic procedures. The illustrator, Carlos A. Vescovo, worked closely with the author in the operating room to produce the abundant illustrations (b&w), which succeed in being both representative and didactic.
