IV ## Preface Center for Mechanical Sciences in October 19?1, deals with the response of deterministic nonlinear memoryless or differential systems to stochastic perturbations. A relatively large part of this text is devoted to the Appendix, which consists of definitions and the orems required in the main text. This appendix is self contained and followed by its own subject index. Three of its four sections are followed by lists of textbooks. These lists are by far not complete, listed are only those books I have consulted during preparation of the manuscript. A little more extensive is the list of literature given at the end of the main text. In concluding the preface I take the opportunity to express my sincerest thanks to the authorities of CISM, especially to Prof. L. Sobrero and W. Olszak, for the invitation to present these lectures, and to my teacher Prof. H. Parkus, who initiated my interest in the applications of stochastic processes to problems of mechanics, and to whom I owe so much.
