This is not an argument against the necessity for 'pure' research: rather it is the threefold claim that 'pure' research is best related to significant issues, that development is itself a major and absorbing field of investigation to which anthropolog-'reflexive'), and as such needs to pay more attention than is generally the rule to developments in critical sociology, the sociology of development and the sociology of knowledge. Perhaps having always taught with, and alongside, sociologists is part of the basis of this, but it also springs from practical experience ofthe fruitfulness ofsuch an approach. Another is the belief that too much anthropology is first-world-centric. Historically this is understandable, but things in the world have now changed somewhat. I have tried to present the elements of an approach that combines the traditions ofthe 'North' with the critical perspectives of the 'South'.
