No-one, not least Fatty Bagan, would have guessed in a million years that -a fog-shrouded lump of rock in the English Channel could have caused so much bother. But when a secret Russian trawler gets stuck on one half of it and the U.S. Marinesand the Sixth Fleet rush in to defend the freedom of the other, the island is the cause of a good deal of rocket-rattling in Moscow and Washington. But on the island itself the atmosphere is anything but crisisiladen. The Americans soon show the Russians the rudiments of baseball and both sides pool their resources and start distilling booze. Entente cordiale prevails on the island and both sides make monkeys out of the politicians in their faraway capitals. And the British contingent? On the sunny, day Albert first inspected his inheritance had no inkling of these coming events. All he had a mind for was the lovely, nubile bird he had discovered giving herself an all-over tan... Hilarious: my favourite scene is where Albert gets a badly suntanned bum through "screwing a bird al fresco" on his island. This book, and indeed all the books by the duo called "David Forrest", should be reprinted, since they rank among the funniest books ever.
