As Anatole, the secret Cheese Taster of the Duval Cheese Factory, and his friend Gaston are at work there one night, they are horrified to encounter a cat. The two mice make a mess of their cheese labeling, to the distress of the factory workers. Anatole leaves a note for M. Duval, stating that he cannot work with a cat around. Not completely comfortable with M. Duval's assurance that he will keep the cat away, Anatole decides he must put a bell on the cat. He tricks it with catnip and bravely secures the bell around its neck. All is again well with both the cheeses and Anatole family. In this Caldecott-honored sequel to the delightful Anatole, Galdone continues to work in the same lighthearted black, gray, and white drawings with the alternate page spreads using sprightly touches of red and blue. There are the same touches of French, along with the flag on the endpapers. The scenes are designed to keep the sequence of the plot flowing: pensive as Anatole considers how to catch the cat and exciting when he scampers down the outside of the factory. Galdone's characters are as appealing as ever.
