American physics in transition : a history of conceptual change in the late 19th century.

"Modern" physics is a relative term, of course, but this third volume in a series traces the history of physics through a 150-year period that saw the rise to power of the United States, the industrial revolution, a civil war and two world wars, and the introduction of atomic power. This book does an excellent job in its concise presentation.
