In April 1917 the formerly Neutral American Isolationist Government of President Woodrow Wilson finally entered into The Great War and cited the main causes for it doing so. After stating those reasons as being the ongoing efforts of representatives of the Deutsches Kaiserreich's government to stir up ill feelings while carrying out war like activities against America inside the borders of its nearby neighbour Mexico, the loss of the RMS Lusitania on 7 May 1915 to the U-Boat U-20, and the U-Bootwaffe's earlier announcement warning of the return of unrestricted U-Boat warfare. The unarmed White Star ocean liner RMS Lusitania was a British Flagged passenger ship that had departed America sailing independently and without naval escort while bound for the UK. On board along with 1962 Crew and Passengers who were mainly British and Canadian civilians, was a load of hidden munitions inside one of her cargo holds. Sighted and successfully stalked by U-20, she was struck by a single torpedo off the Irish coast that resulted in a much larger secondary explosion taking place inside of the liners hull. This secondary explosion was the result of some of its hidden munitions on board self detonating and It took only 18 minutes after being struck for the liner to founder, taking down with her 1198 men, women and children - amongst their number were 128 Americans. After entering the war, America announced it would field its own independent army and high command and not operate under either British or French commanders. This illustrated history examining the experiences of that force and its senior officers who served on the Western Front over 1917-18, is compiled by Author Jack Holroyd and is based around several sets of rare images not seen since their original publication in America during 1920. When the United States entered the war in April 1917 the belligerents were approaching exhaustion. It had been hoped by the Generals in both Britain and France that untold numbers of fresh troops would be assimilated into their respective commands. However, this idea was firmly resisted, America would field its own army alongside the Allies it would have its own section on the front line. Those with concerns that the untried divisions under General Pershing would fair badly against the seasoned German military machine were soon reassured as impressive victories were won by the newcomers. The book is split into eight chapters which deal with different pivotal moments during the First World War from the American perspective, from the reasons behind the American involvement in the war and initial training to the major battles at Cantigny, Chateau Thierry and St. Mihiel. This story is told in pictures gleaned from the official archives which were first published in 1920 and now presented for reexamination and public awareness in the Images of War series.
