Here is one more Old Church Slavonic (OCS) grammar, and once more hopelessly mixed up with odds and ends of what is traditionally called Slavic comparative grammar, that is, history or description ― or both ― of Common Slavic. It is so mixed that, in fact, it is neither one nor the other. The book consists of a rather short external history of OCS (pp. 13-23), phonology ― OCS and Common Slavic (pp. 24-114), morphology ― OCS and Common Slavic (pp. 115-245), two large fragments from OCS manuscripts, translated, grammatically commented upon, and furnished with a glossary (pp. 246-295). The author is not too modest in his claims. He declares that his intention is "to arouse enthusiasm (Begeisterung) in young German Slavists for comparative-historical studies" (p. v). Yet on the same page he informs us that he will avoid all controversies and discussions and even not attach a bibliography. [George Y. Shevelov.
