Warder Kris Denn hopes it will save their home, Rumika, but nothing is so simple on the island of Twaa-Fei. This once-neutral ground is riven by infighting, suspicion, and mistrust. Cooler heads like Warder Ojo Kante, whose nation of Quloi is at war with Rumika, are being sent home. Other nations are willing to listen to the evidence, but no one seems to want to end the conflict. As soldiers die and ships burn, the warders who remain teeter on the edge between one last chance at diplomacy and the ruin of unrelenting war. When upstart Kris Denn tries to win their island a seat in the Warder's Circle and colonial subject Oda no Michiko discovers that her conquered nation's past is not what she's been told, they upset the balance of power.
