Alger, 1898: La Grande Vague Antijuive (french Edition)

Analyzes the status of the Jewish community in French-colonial Algeria during the second half of the 19th century. Documents the socio-political context which led to the decision by Adolph Crémieux to grant French citizenship to Algerian Jews (1870). Compares the antisemitic backlash during the three decades following that decree with the anti-Dreyfusard reaction in France. Emphasizes the role of Max Régis, mayor of Algiers and editor of "L'Antijuif", and his mentor Édouard Drumont, in inciting anti-Jewish violence in Algeria in 1897-98. Concludes that despite persistent efforts by various elements in Algeria and France to abrogate the Crémieux decree, the Algerian Jews never renounced their loyalty to France. Pp. 45-157 at the end of the book contain a reprint of part of a book published in Algiers in 1899, "L'oeuvre des antijuifs d'Alger", published to counter the attacks against the Jews in the press; the section reprinted here contains excerpts from the antisemitic press.
