This is the second of two volumes of the only English edition of Hegel's Aesthetics, the work in which he gives full expression to his seminal theory of art. The substantial Introduction is his best exposition of his general philosophy of art. In Part I he considers the general nature of art as a spiritual experience, distinguishes the beauty of art and the beauty of nature, and examines artistic genius and originality. Part II surveys the history of art from the ancient world through to the end of the eighteenth century, probing the meaning and significance of major works. Part III (in the second volume) deals individually with architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and literature; a rich array of examples makes vivid his exposition of his theory. Hegel's Aesthetics presents his seminal art theory. He surveys art history from ancient India, Egypt & Greece to the Romantic movement, criticizes major works & probes their meaning. Examples give scope for his judgment, vividly expositing his theory. His Introduction exposits of his philosophy of art, providing a way into the Aesthetics. Part 1 treats art's general nature: distinguishes art, as a spiritual experience, from religion & philosophy; discusses artistic differentiated from natural beauty & examines artistic genius. Part 2 provides art history divided into three periods: Symbolic (India, Persia, Egypt), Classical (Greece) & Romantic (medieval to 1800). Part 3 deals with architecture, scuplture, painting, music & literature. Offers an expression to the author's seminal theory of art. This title considers the general nature of art as a spiritual experience, distinguishes the beauty of art and the beauty of nature, and examines artistic genius and originality. It also surveys the history of art from the ancient world through to the end of the eighteenth century. The first part of the science we are studying was devoted to the general conception and the reality of beauty in nature and art: true beauty and true art or, in other words, the Ideal, in the still-undeveloped unity of its fundamental characteristics, independently of its particular content and its different modes of manifestation. Since we are now moving out of the Introduction and entering upon the scientific treatment of our subject, our first task is to indicate briefly the general place of artistic beauty in the realm of reality as a whole and of aesthetics in relation to other philosophical disciplines.
