This is a kind of book that would be widely read in the 19th century England. James Chalmers is an English missionary who visits New Guinea in the hopes of converting the indigenous population. He recounts his experiences in the islands, the traditions of the native population, his peacemaking efforts between the tribes, the massacre of the teachers who were tasked with teaching the native population how to read so that they could read the Bible, etc. One has the impression that Chalmers is very sympathetic to the natives and the natives, mostly, are really happy to meet this man who entertains them with the stories about resurrection, about which, "some laughed, others seemed serious."
