It is very appropriate that this first meeting of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery should be held in Edinburgh. From Sir Charles Bell up to the present time the Edinburgh school has played a prominent role among European medical centres in increasing our knowledge of the nervous system and in the progress of neurosurgery. We are grateful to our host Professor Gillingham and his colleagues, who have made important contributions to the development of stereotaxy, for taking on the task of organising this meeting and to Sir Donald Douglas and the Royal College of Surgeons for welcoming us here.
