Iterative comparison of analytical results and natural observations with predictions of numerical models improves interpretation of geological processes. Further refinements derive from wide-angle comparison of results from various scales of study. In this volume, advances from field, laboratory and modelling approaches to tectonic evolution - from the lithosphere to the rock scale - are compared. Constructive use is made of apparently discrepant or non-consistent results from analytical or methodological approaches in processing field or laboratory data, P-T estimates, absolute or relative age determinations of tectonic events, tectonic unit size in crustal-scale deformation, grain-scale deformation processes, various modelling approaches, and numerical techniques.Advances in geodynamic modelling critically depend on new insights into grain- and subgrain-scale deformation processes. Conversely, quantitative models help to identify which rheological laws and parameters exert the strongest control on multi-scale deformation up to lithosphere and upper mantle scale. In June 1965, a small group of European economic geologists gathered in Heidelberg, Germany, at the invitation of Professor G. C. Amstutz and decided to establish the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA) and to start a journal to be called Mineralium Deposita. The first issue of the journal came out in May 1966, and has now matured to a leading journal in economic geology The first Biennial SGA Meeting was held successfully in Nancy, France, in 1991, with subsequent meetings in Grenada (Spain; 1993), Prague (Czech Republic; 1995), Turku (Finland; 1997), London (United Kingdom; 1999), Krakov (Poland; 2001) and Athens (Greece; 2003). In 2002, th the SGA Council decided that its 8 Biennial Meeting in 2005 should be held in Beijing, China, making this the first Biennial Meeting to be convened outside - th rope. Significantly, 2005 also marks the 40 anniversary of the SGA. The decision to host this year’s premier meeting in Beijing reflects the Society’s successful transition from its traditional European focus to a truly global organization, with 24% of SGA members situated in North America, 13% in Australia and Oceania, and 5% in Asia. Over the last 27 years China has made dramatic progress towards political and economic reform, and opening the nation to the outside world. China’s rapid e- nomic development demands increasing amounts of minerals, fuels and materials, and this is currently a major driver for the global economic markets.

The proceedings volume (incl. CD-ROM) is a compilation of approximately 400 extended abstracts (up to 4 pages long) of presentations given at the 8th Biennial SGA Meeting. The papers are grouped according to the thematic sessions within which they were presented, including Tectonics, lithospheric, and deep mantle controls on global metallogenic provinces and giant ore deposits; Base and precious metal mineralization in sediments during basin evolution; Metallogeny and exploration of uranium deposits; Magmas and base-metal ore deposits; Epigenetic gold systems; Submarine ore systems and ancient analogues; Understanding ore systems though precise geochronology, isotope tracing and microgeochemistry; Geology and economics of non-metallic resources; Conceptual targeting of mineral deposits. Due to the meeting being held in Beijing, the conference and proceedings volume also feature thematic sessions that focus on specific regions throughout Asia, such as Mesozoic to recent geodynamics and metallogeny of eastern Asia; Metallogeny of the Tethys-Himalayan Orogen; Geodynamics and metallogeny of the Altaid Orogen; and Exploration, Discovery, and Mine Developments in China. As such, the volume represents a comprehensive summary of cutting-edge developments across a wide range of subject matters that are of extreme relevance to the global research, mining and exploration community.

Only satellite-based remote-sensing instruments generate the wealth of global data on the concentrations of atmospheric constituents that are necessary for long-term monitoring of the atmosphere. This set of courses and lectures sponsored by ICTP in Trieste focuses on remote sensing for atmospheric applications and inverse methods to assess atmospheric components, gases, aerosols and clouds. It addresses primarily graduate students and young researchers in the atmospheric sciences but will be useful for all those wishing to study various techniques for exploring the atmosphere by remote sensing. Contributions span topics such as on IGOS (Integrated Global Observing Strategy), electromagnetic scattering by non-spherical particles, forward-modelling requirements and the information content problem, Earth radiation, and aerosol monitoring by LIDAR.
