Annotation This volume represents the outcome of the International Conference on "Extending Database Technology", held in Venice, Italy, in March 1988. It contains the major dimensions into which database technology is currently being pushed by the needs of new applications and pulled by the chances of novel developments in hardware and systems architecture. The two broad areas covered are: extended database semantics: data models and data types, databases and logic, complex objects, and expert system approaches to databases; and new architectures and increased database systems support: novel transaction models, data distribution and replication, database administration and access efficiency. Since an increasing amount of database research and development is done through international cooperation and within joint projects (ESPRIT, EUREKA, industrial cooperations), a substantial part of the book is dedicated to representing about a dozen advanced database projects on data- and knowledge-based systems and on distributed database applications by their aims, status, and results Types for data-oriented languages....Pages 1-15 Optimization in a logic based language for knowledge and data intensive applications....Pages 16-33 A Prolog interface to a Functional Data Model database....Pages 34-48 The processing and evaluation of transitive closure queries....Pages 49-75 Supporting semantic rules by a generalized event/trigger mechanism....Pages 76-91 Optimal plan search in a rule-based query optimizer....Pages 92-112 Information systems design: An expert system approach....Pages 113-133 Multi-level transaction management, theoretical art or practical need?....Pages 134-154 Views and security in distributed database management systems....Pages 155-169 An overview of the distributed query system DQS....Pages 170-189 TAILOR, a tool for updating views....Pages 190-213 An intelligent information dictionary for semantic manipulation of relational databases....Pages 214-230 A model of authorization for object-oriented and semantic databases....Pages 231-250 A foundation for evolution from relational to object databases....Pages 251-270 Col: A logic-based language for complex objects....Pages 271-293 A universal relation model for nested relations....Pages 294-308 Multilevel trie hashing....Pages 309-335 Var-page-lru a buffer replacement algorithm supporting different page sizes....Pages 336-351 The twin grid file: A nearly space optimal index structure....Pages 352-363 A comparison of concatenated and superimposed code word surrogate files for very large data/knowledge bases....Pages 364-387 Filter-based join algorithms on uniprocessor and distributed-memory multiprocessor database machines....Pages 388-413 Placement of replicated items in distributed databases....Pages 414-427 Optimizing voting-type algorithms for replicated data....Pages 428-442 Quasi-copies: Efficient data sharing for information retrieval systems....Pages 443-468 Process management and assertion enforcement for a semantic data model....Pages 469-487 A uniform approach to constraint satisfaction and constraint satisfiability in deductive databases....Pages 488-505 Geo-relational algebra: A model and query language for geometric database systems....Pages 506-527 An extension of the relational model to support generic intervals....Pages 528-542 Esprit: Trends & challenges in DB technology....Pages 543-548 Project session on support for data and knowledge-based applications....Pages 549-550 The algres project....Pages 551-555 O 2 , an object-oriented data model....Pages 556-562 Data base programming tools in the ATLANT language....Pages 563-566 An overview of siderues: A graphical database schema editor for Galileo....Pages 567-571 Towards KBMS for software development: An overview of the DAIDA project....Pages 572-577 Entity-situation: A model for the knowledge representation module of a KBMS....Pages 578-582 TELL-ME: A natural language query system....Pages 583-587 Project session on distributed database applications....Pages 588-589 PRISMA database machine: A distributed, main-memory approach....Pages 590-593 SABRINA-RT, a distributed DBMS for telecommunications....Pages 594-599 A multidatabase system for transnational accounting....Pages 600-605 Multos: a document server for distributed office systems....Pages 606-615 The DURESS project: Extending databases into an open systems architecture....Pages 616-620 Contains major dimensions into which database technology is being pushed by the needs of various applications and pulled by the chances of novel developments in hardware and systems architecture.
