Absolute Honesty by Larry Johnson and Bob Phillips deals with the critical role of honesty, ethics and morals in business. In 10 Chapters and 290 pages, the authors bring out the negative consequences of dishonesty, shying away from speaking up, lack of a clear policy on ethics etc. They point out the benefits of actively following Absolute Honesty. While the book focuses on the corporate scene in USA, especially in the wake of many corporate scandals that broke out in 2002, similar situations have arisen in many other parts of the world and this book strikes a welcome chord in many a heart. The book is meant for every one but especially for leaders and managers of business organisations, big or small. Employees also benefit, since they will learn the need for courage and honesty, the need to stay away from illegal and immoral activities, so that one can not only sleep better but also look at oneself in the mirror after waking up, without guilt. The authors accomplish what they set out to do, very effectively. The book is very well produced, with the important points well structured and effectively communicated. Reading the book was like attending a seminar and listening to Larry speak. The style is lucid and friendly. Bob's rich experience as a Human Resources expert has added significant value to the book, in the form of real life examples. [...] where Chapter 2 is available as sample. Chapter 1 is a good introduction to the book and chapter 10 is a good review of the whole book. All in all, a very valuable addition to the bookshelf of every manager. The book serves the role of a good self-study guide too. I would like to share with the readers of this review, excerpts from a mail which I wrote to Larry Johnson, after reading the book. "I finished reading the book. It is excellent and I am really happy that I could read the book. The book appealed to my own strong ethical and moral streak. ..............I found the tips for differing with boss, like off-line communication very useful. I found a few places where I would have edited the matter a litle differently. But in general, the editorial standards are quite high. Would you consider bringing out the contents of this book as a Seminar on Multi-Media CD, or as a companion to the book? Thank you for this excellent book. Swamy" In another development, Larry asked me whether he can share with his readers his experience of my own honesty and integrity. I agreed. Ethics has no enemies, or so we all like to think. Yet the corporate landscape has been an ethical battleground in recent years, with the corrupt behaviors of Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, and others leading many to question whether "corporate integrity" is an oxymoron. But for most companies, fortunately, the problem is not whether to practice truthfulness and accountability. It's how to integrate such practices into the culture so that they are rewarded, self-perpetuating, and virtually automatic. Absolute Honesty provides the blueprint. It gives you a template for creating and sustaining a business environment of open communication and healthy debate. It replaces what the authors call the Kumbaya Syndrome -- embrace all decisions, no matter how stupid or unethical; smile and sing the company campfire song! -- with a straight-thinking system that respects honesty instead of demeaning it. At once timely and timeless, this book shows you how to build a cultural infrastructure rooted in the Six Laws of Absolute Honesty. Through a rich selection of anecdotal case studies from such organizations as Marriott Hotels, Costco, and the U.S. Army, Absolute Honesty illustrates the quantifiable business benefits of absolute honesty. Whether your primary objective is to create a memorable brand, build market share, increase workforce productivity, or establish consistent leadership, the process outlined by these authors will help you get there. The results will speak for themselves. WorldCom. Enron. Tyco. Shocking accusations of dishonesty and silent complicity have dominated headlines recently, and cost the American economy trillions of dollars. Clearly, dishonesty doesn't pay. Drawing from these stories, as well as from more positive ones, Absolute Honesty shows how to establish and maintain a culture where honest communication is the norm, and employees can speak openly without fear of retribution. The book illustrates the impact that truthfulness and accountability can have on organizations, attacking the sort of passivity that allows little lies to grow into giant disasters. Structured around the Six Laws of Absolute Honesty, this insightful book goes beyond simply extolling the virtues of ethics to provide a template managers can use to maintain an environment of healthy debate. It also contains a toolbox of techniques anyone can apply to improve his or her ability to confront and resolve difficult issues. Companies can reap huge benefits from cultivating an atmosphere of trust. Absolute Honesty is an important, timely book that provides readers with the tools and strategies to establish a culture in which communication thrives and results speak for themselves. Dishonesty does not pay, and in the wake of headlines involving the likes of Enron, WorldCom and Tyco, organizations need to establish ways of maintaining cultures where open, honest communication is the norm. This handbook demonstrates how readers can maintain an environment in which employees speak their mind without fearing reprisal, and truthfulness and accountability show themselves for what they are: business assets. The authors offer a toolbox of strategies that can be used to improve an organization's ability to confront and resolve difficult issues. Provocative and sensitive issues are also addressed, including dealing with a difficult or even dishonest boss, "agreeing to disagree", and accepting criticism without becoming defensive. Many examples, both positive and negative, are given, along with scenarios, anecdotes and quotations WORLDCOM. ENRON. DOZENS OF DOT-COMS. TYCO. ARTHUR Andersen. Adelphia. AOL TimeWarner.
