The consequences of the rise of emerging powers like China and India is becoming the most important topic of debate in international studies. This book focuses on the impact of these changes on the way we study international politics: if international politics is changing, should we also change international studies? To fully understand the non-Western world and its growing impact on global politics, International Studies as a discipline has to change. The assumption that it speaks to universal realities has left the subject trapped within its current conventions and debates. Pierre P. Lizee argues that the nature of the state in the non-Western world, the nature of the market, and other such realities have to be studied in more detail in order to produce a better account of the way in which the non-Western world will influence global politics. Indeed, democratization, conflict resolution, development and international stability will all move forward within processes and agendas designed to a growing degree by non-Western actors Front Matter....Pages i-vii Introduction: Understanding the Post-Western World....Pages 1-13 Front Matter....Pages 15-15 Competing Universals: Realism....Pages 17-38 Competing Universals: Liberalism....Pages 39-60 Situating the Particular: After Constructivism....Pages 61-78 Front Matter....Pages 79-79 Violence, Rationality, and the State....Pages 81-95 Politics, Economics, and Self-Identity....Pages 96-118 The Construction of Difference in International Affairs....Pages 119-139 Front Matter....Pages 141-141 Reinventing Realism: Power and Violence in the Post-Western World....Pages 143-167 Reinventing Liberalism: Values and Change in the Post-Western World....Pages 168-192 The Way Forward: Searching for New Universals in Global Politics....Pages 193-216 Conclusion....Pages 217-220 Back Matter....Pages 221-250 "To fully understand the non-Western world and its growing impact on global politics, International Studies as a discipline has to change.
