Some day a Siuai native may read this book; if so, I hope he will accept my gratitude to his people for the part they played in making the book possible. Some of them, like Peuru of Mi'kahna, came to see and describe their institutions with clarity and objectivity. Others were too deeply immersed for such perspective and served rather as unwitting bearers of the culture's norms and modes.
