When Professor Alpert's study of the Spanish Civil War was first published it set the standard for approaches to the international aspects of the conflict, covering the whole era and setting the action in Spain against major events throughout the world of the 1930s. Now reissued, the book has been updated to take into account recent scholarship in the field as well as newly available archival material. It is now twenty years since a study was dedicated to the international aspects of the Spanish Civil War and this new synthesis covering the whole of the era and setting it against major events of the late 1930s is well overdue. Michael Alpert takes full advantage of newly accessible archival sources to disentangle the intricacies of this complex issue. At the root of Western European insecurity in the interwar years lay France's fears of a rearmed and revanchiste Germany.
