This is the first modern multi-archival study of the American–Philippine encounter in its formative years. Peter Stanley newly interprets both Philippine history and the nature of American imperialism. Drawing extensively upon manuscript sources in the Philippines and the United States, he shows that the early years of Fil–American relations were a historical fulcrum for both peoples. The Philippine revolution against Spain, the author argues, was a modernizing convulsion. Its goals were as varied in substance and intensity as the perspectives from which men criticized the status quo. Preface Contents ONE. The Philippines, 1565–1898 1. Society and Culture 2.
