WHEN I first conceived the idea of writing the work of whichthree volumes are herewith published, I intended to producemerely a short History of Spanish Painting, incorporating in itthe material of my lectures in a course that I have long givenat Harvard; but I soon found that, if the book was to add anythingto what had already appeared in print upon the subject,it must be expanded into a more comprehensive treatise. Suchscholars as Bertaux and Mayer had written excellent compendiumsof the evolution of Spanish painting. Bertaux had beenthe great pioneer in applying to the field of primitive Spanishart the modern scientific methods of research and interpretation;and among the many merits of Mayer's Geschichte derspanischen Malerei, not the least was the thoroughness withwhich he recorded large numbers of pictorial monuments thathad been hitherto unknown to the general world of artisticcriticism. On the other hand, a goodly company of investigatorshad discussed at length, in scattered articles or even books, single examples of Spanish painting or some of the regionalschools. These investigators of small subdivisions of the fieldor of isolated objects were chiefly Spaniards who had a localinterest in the archaeology of their respective provinces andhad often unearthed important documentary and historicaldata but who had not always related their discoveries to thecourse of artistic development in the rest of Europe or even inthe other sections of the Iberian peninsula. The moment, therefore, seemed to have come to unite both these phases ofresearch, to make a synthesis of the history of Spanish paintingin all its schools and at the same time to treat the individualexamples and tendencies in more detail than had been possibleto the scope of Bertaux's and Mayer's publications. Such havebeen my aims, and I have at every point sought also to interpretthe progress and specimens of Spanish painting in the lightof the orderly evolution of European art in general.
