A History of Central European Women's Writing offers a unique survey of literature from the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. It illustrates the development of women's writing in the region from the middle ages to the present day, placing individual writers in their social and political context and showing how processes shaping their lives are reflected in their works. Booknews The women writers of Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovakia, and Slovenia have been much neglected in the literature, more so than their male equivalents. Hawkesworth (Serbian and Croatian studies, U. College, London) sets out to correct this imbalance with this collection of 18 essays that cover writing from the Middle Ages to the present. The contributors are academics and researchers of the literature of these countries who reside either there or in London. Annotation c.
