Eight chapters walk through various stages of building one's career path, from choices one makes as an undergrad and graduate student to applying for one's first job or getting one's first assistant professorship. Each chapter contains 1-3 page statements about applications, collecting research interests, publishing, research presentation, interviews and more. Additionally, most chapters contain a section on "the hard truths" as well as a summary section. In a final chapter, Chakrabarty also comments on the challenges facing minorities and especially women in building an academic career. Several appendices include examples of various critical documents like the undergrad CV, the thesis proposal, research interests for job applications, but also an example of a job interview, and a review package for summary presentations. Chakrabarty has written this for would-be research academics, scientists especially, but thinks engineering and medical students have more to consider and might not get as much out of this book.
