Twenty-four historians examine particular topics related to America's war with Vietnam, both in terms of the war itself and in terms of the domestic ramifications the war had on the United States. Presented by Young (history, New York U.) and Buzzanco (history, U. of Houston), the papers address traditional concerns such as presidential planning, as well as newer concerns such as the intersections of race, gender, and class among Vietnamese and Americans. Other topics include the impact of the morale of the South Vietnamese army, the character and impact of the antiwar movement, and the changing rhetoric surrounding prisoners of war and missing in action. "The Vietnam War was ""the quintessential conflict in the long history of warfare in our century,"" says Gabriel Kolko, who thinks it was ""virtually preordained"" that the USA would try to attain a vital military success to compensate for its failures in Korea" These historiographical and narrative essays by leading historians examine the war in its most important contexts. It contains an expanded bibliography of hundreds of secondary sources to guide further research
