A basic vocabulary of Old English prose =: Grundwortschatz altenglische Prosa

Text in English and German. Up to now beginning students of Old English have had no simple and efficient means of rapidly developing the essential vocabulary which would enable them to read typical Old English prose texts. The following word-list is designed to serve this function. The word-list is based not only upon the entries in the glossaries of the editions indicated but also upon our experience in the classroom as teachers of Old English. We have not deemed it necessary or advisable to include every word which appears in the texts and have therefore consciously omitted, for example, highly specialized or idiosyncratic terminology of low frequency, obvious cognates, and compounds which could easily be determined from the simplex forms.
