Dave Szatmary - Library Journal
Clif Stoltze, a well-known graphic designer, presents 1000 examples of music-related graphics from designers around the world. He organizes the book into CD covers, posters, and such odds and ends as T-shirts and book covers, ending with an index listing the designers for each piece as well as the name, address, and phone number of the design firm. Though showcasing many innovative, eye-popping graphics, the compiler never describes his criteria for choosing the specific artwork, offers no background information about the designers, and ignores such current masters as Emek and Drowning Creek. Many prominent artists are featured (e.g., Art Chantry and Jeff Kleinsmith), and Stoltze generally groups each artist's work together in one section but sometimes inexplicably separates one piece from the other works by the designer. He also fails to list the date and the medium of the graphics. Overall, despite its flaws, the book provides a fresh look at some talented designers who use music as their inspiration. It will be an excellent companion to Paul Grushkin and Dennis King's more comprehensive Art of Modern Rock and Spencer Drate's two-volume Swag.
